"tips For Filing Travel Insurance Claims Successfully In Australia"
"tips For Filing Travel Insurance Claims Successfully In Australia" - Years ago I wrote a post about my 'hunt for travel insurance'. I looked at several different companies and ended up choosing World Nomads travel insurance as the right option for me. Even as I wrote the post, I was mortified that I had to consider buying insurance. I had paid for health and car insurance for years and never had to file a claim, now I had to pay for insurance to travel?
Well, after four years of traveling I have finally had to file a claim. As some of you may know, I recently broke my camera while kayaking down the Lang River in northern Thailand. Long story short, I took a risk and lost my camera as a result. My fault, right?

Still, I decided to file a travel insurance claim. Having never filed one before, I wasn't sure how it would go. But since World Nomads' Explorer plan covers extreme activities, including kayaking, I thought it couldn't hurt to go through the motions. I just got the verdict: My claim has just been approved!
On The Money: Travel Insurance Can Help, But Has Its Limits
Here are some tips for when the unexpected happens and you find yourself having to file a travel insurance claim.
Travel insurance varies from company to company and from plan to plan. When choosing a plan, keep in mind the kind of coverage you are looking for. What activities will you do? Which countries do you want to travel to? Are there any exclusions that your travel insurance does not cover?
When you need to make a claim, go back to your plan's summary of benefits to get an idea of whether what happened is something that will be covered by your plan.
Receipts, booking confirmations, medical bills, damaged equipment...if you have anything that relates to whatever it is you're claiming, KEEP IT. You will need extensive documentation to file a claim, and the more prepared you are, the better.

I was lucky - I misplaced the receipt for the replacement camera I bought, but was able to provide screenshots of the camera on the store's website, verified by a copy of my credit card statement, as an alternative. Your case manager may not be so lenient, so save those receipts!
I wasn't so sure that my claim would be approved. When I looked at my policy, I could see reasons why it should be and reasons why it might not be. Which brings us to this point: even if it seems like a slim chance, file anyway! Worst case scenario: your claim is rejected and you lack some time and effort. But - chances are - you're not a claim examiner, so even if you're unsure whether your claim will be approved or not, it doesn't hurt to try.
These types of things are best resolved quickly. Both for your benefit (you'll probably need that money if you're a backpacker!), and to make it easier for the case manager to get all the necessary information. In addition, most policies have a period of time after an incident in which you can make a claim. Outside that window, well, you're out of luck.
It's easy to forget with the internet, but the claims examiner has feelings too. Being rude or demanding won't do you any favors. As someone who has worked in retail for years, I can say that if someone was polite, I would feel more inclined to help them. If they came into my shop as a nasty 'but the customer is always right!' person, they usually didn't get too far.

When filing your claim, don't skimp on the details. Dates, times, locations, step accounts, weather conditions, etc. Anything that may be relevant should be mentioned in your claim. This reduces the back and forth and gives the caseworker a complete picture immediately.
Unfortunately, travel insurance can be a bit like politics and glaciers: it takes a while for things to happen. File your claim as completely as possible, then sit back and relax. It may take a while, but if your claim is valid and you've submitted everything, hopefully it will be worth it!
My preferred travel insurance is World Nomads. They are a cheap, comprehensive option aimed at backpackers and people who participate in adventure sports. On top of that, they are a socially conscious company. If, after you've done your own research, you'd like to get travel insurance through them, consider signing up via the form below. You receive the standard price, but World Nomads gives me a small commission. Thank you very much!

Different degrees of coverage are available through AXA SmartTraveller's two plans, Essential or Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive plan provides up to S$150,000 for COVID-19 cover, while the Essential plan only provides up to S$75,000 if you need medical care abroad. With $1 million in coverage, Allianz Travel Insurance offers the most comprehensive COVID-19 medical coverage. In addition, it offers a special benefit: if you are admitted to a hospital as an inpatient, you can choose to have payments advanced (subject to availability or approval).
However, the absence of a global hospital payment and quarantine cover deducts points. Choose this option if you want a single policy without having to put on a COVID-19 add-on.
File A Claim
For a maximum of 45 days from the first day, which is the day you first seek treatment, or when your unemployment benefit limit is first met, whichever comes first, travel expenses to and from hospitals can be claimed.
This plan gives you a lot of flexibility when it comes to changing your travel plan, but it's not nearly as flexible when it comes to receiving medical care. If you're younger than 55, have no underlying health problems, and have had your shots, it's probably preferable.
